ROME TOWNSHIP — Rome Township Fire Chief Steve Rutherford said the early Thursday blaze that destroyed an Orchard Drive garage and an apartment above it is for now being ruled as “undetermined” in origin.
“Because of the structural collapse it’s hard to reconstruct and find the actual origin of the fire,” Rutherford said. “When we arrived, the structure was fully involved and within a half hour of the fire there was a shift in the structure and that’s why it collapsed.”
He said the undetermined status may change if new information is obtained in the future.
Four firefighters were treated at St. Mary’s Medical Center in Huntington, W.Va., but were released and are now home to recuperate from what Rutherford said were non-life threatening injuries they sustained while putting out the blaze.
Both Chesapeake-Union and Proctorville fire departments provided mutual aid.
