LUCASVILLE - When two good teams with good pitchers meet, the offense usually takes a back seat.
That was the case Friday in a classic pitcher's duel as Portsmouth West slipped past the Rock Hill Redwomen 1-0 in the Division III district tournament semifinals.
West's Kayla Evans pitched a three-hitter as she struck out 11 and walked one. Rock Hill's Mandi Estep was just as impressive with a five-hitter as she struck out six and did not walk a batter.
"We had people on base but we didn't get the hits when we needed them," Redwomen coach Mary Harper.
West got the only run of the game in the second inning on singles by Laci Sowards, Taylor Messer and Lindy Coleman.
Bobbi Harper, Katrina Settles and Estep all went 1-for-3 for the Redwomen.
Rock Hill finishes the season 20-6.
"We're disappointed to lose, but I'm proud of the kids. They had a really good season. They have nothing to be ashamed of," coach Harper said.
