FLATWOODS, Ky.— Ironton used a strong second half on both sides of the ball to beat the Russell Red Devils 29-13 Friday.
Ironton (2-0) led 15-13 at the half, but the defense shutout the Russell offense in the second half that included interceptions by Michael Lawless and Brian Warner.
Tres Wilks ran for 84 yards and a touchdown as Ironton rolled up 233 yards rushing. Tyler Hager ran for 57 yards and two touchdowns, Warner added 42 yards and a score, and quarterback Tommy Waginger was 3-of-3 passing for 60 yards including a 21-yard touchdown pass to Lawless.
Coal Grove 18, Athens 13
COAL GROVE — Bubba Wood ran for two touchdowns and Boo Woods scored on a 47-yard run as Coal Grove took an 18-0 halftime lead and held off an Athens rally in the second half.
After Athens got within 18-13, the Bulldogs were driving late in the game in an attempt to take the lead only to have the Coal Grove defense halt the drive and hang on for their second win in as many games.
Lucasville Valley 41, Rock Hill 6
PEDRO — The Lucasville Valley Indians fell behind, then ran off 41 unanswered points to beat the Rock Hill Redmen 41-6 Friday.
Quarterback Will McCollister ran 28 yards for a touchdown to start the game and put the Redmen up 6-0.
Blake Yates ran for 75 yards and a touchdown and also hit 11 of 20 passes for 162 yards and three scores to lead the Indians to their second straight win.
David Schultz had a 3-yard scoring run to put Valley up 7-6 and Yates hit Alex Hartley with an 78-yard scoring strike for a 14-6 lead. Yates race 63 yards for the next score and a 21-6 halftime lead.
Symmes Valley 43, River Valley 0
WILLOW WOOD — Evan Herrell ran 96 yards for a touchdown and Jacob Patterson returned an interception 50 yards for a score as the Symmes Valley Vikings routed the River Vallley Raiders 43-0 Friday.
Herrell had 144 yards rushing on just six carries and also caught a 58-yards scoring pass from Cody Myers. The Vikings (2-0) ran for 291 yards and threw for 156 more as they racked up 447 total yards.
Myers was 6-of-9 for 146 yards and also ran 7 yards for a score.
South Point 48, Our Lady of Mt. Carmel 20
SOUTH POINT — Larry Brandon ran for 107 yards on 18 carries and scored twice to lead a balanced running game as the South Point Pointers rolled past the Our Lady of Mount Carmel Crusaders from Canada 48-20 Friday.
Will Hill added 73 yards on eight carries with a touchdown, quarterback Tevin Mitchell had 63 yards on 11 carries and a TD and also hit 3-of-4 passing for 57 yards and two scores.
Trey Campbell caught a 19-yard TD pass and returned a punt 64 yards for a score.
The Pointers had 372 yards rushing while the defense limited the wide-open offense of the Crusaders to 195 yards.
Wayne 20, Chesapeake 14
WAYNE, W.Va. — Tyler Adkins intercepted a pass at the 5-yard line to end a possible winning touchdown as the Wayne Pioneers held off the Chesapeake Panthers 20-14 Friday.
Wayne took a 20-0 midway through the second quarter, but Chesapeake came back to get within 20-14 on a 26-yard pass play from Austin McMaster to Patrick Hintz before the half and on a 1-yard scoring run by Trey West in the third quarter.
Chesapeake out-gained the Pioneers 191-184, but the Panthers had five turnovers including three fumbles and two interceptions.
Meigs 13, Fairland 6
POMEROY — Zach Sayre ran 15 yards for a touchdown in the first quarter and Cameron Bolin threw 23 yards to Colton Stewart in the fourth quarter to give the Meigs Marauders a 13-6 win over the Fairland Dragons.
The Dragons got within 13-6 with 1:30 left on a 25-yard run by Chad Fisher. But Meigs was able to run out the clock and preserve the win.
Fisher ran for 142 yards and was 7-of-20 for 84 yards. He accounted for 226 of the Dragons’ 244 total yards.
