The Green Local School District in nearby Scioto County may be the first local district to seek more help from taxpayers to keep the doors open, but there is a good chance it will not be the last.

A variety of changes at the state and federal level have, in many cases, drastically cut funding for public education in Ohio. This is compounded by a funding system that has long been declared unconstitutional, yet remains essentially unchanged.

School districts have few options to overcome ever-increasing expenses.

Green is no exception. The loss of revenue has drastically impacted the district. Something has to be done to ensure that the students in the school district have the same opportunities as those in more affluent areas of the state.

Unfortunately, that means the burden falls on the local taxpayers.

Overall, this levy comes at a relatively minimal cost to property owners.

Those with a home valued at $50,000 will pay approximately $120 a year. That equates to $10 a month in additional costs, or roughly the cost of a pizza.

That is a small price to pay to invest in the future of the youth in Franklin Furnace and Green Township.

Some will argue that the district hasn’t been smart with its money but, ultimately, citizens voted for their representatives to serve on the board.

If those people aren’t doing a good job, voters can make a change at the polls. But they shouldn’t punish the students in the process.
