Donald Long

SPRINGFIELD — Donald Ray “Don” Long, 76, of Springfield, went to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ in the presence of his loving family on Sunday, Jan. 22, 2012, in the Riverside Hospital. He was born on June 22, 1935, to Clyde and Anna (Willis) Long, in Ironton, a heritage he was always proud of. He graduated from Rock Hill High School in Ironton, where he played football on the 1954 undefeated team and shared those stories the rest of his life. Don enlisted in the United States Army and served our country from 1957-1962. He began working at International Harvester in 1966 and retired 30 years later and was member of UAW Local 402. Don met the Lord in 1962 and faithfully served Him the rest of his life and was a member of the Forest Valley Free Will Baptist Church. He is survived by his beloved wife Linda G. (Chatfield) Long and they shared 53 wonderful years together. He and Linda enjoyed Southern Gospel music and attended the National Quartet Convention for 30 years. In 1997 Don began working at the Littleton & Rue Funeral Home and spent 15 years ministering compassion to grieving families. He enjoyed many activities some of which were, officiating many sporting events (except basketball) and was especially proud of his strawberry garden. Don volunteered over 2,000 hours at Mercy Hospital. He is also survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Debbie and Mick Humston of New Carlisle; and one son and daughter-in-law, Greg and Cheryl Long of Springfield; three grandchildren, Danielle, Chad and Travis; five great grandchildren, McKayla, Brennan, Cayden, Carson, and Eradynn; one brother and sister-in-law, Roy and Kay Long of Pedro, and one sister and brother-in-law, Dorothy and Sam Matkins of Ironton; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, and three brothers, Jim Adams, Perry and George Long. A gathering of family and friends will be from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. on Thursday in the Littleton & Rue Funeral Home, 830 N. Limestone St., Springfield. A celebration of his life will be at 10:30 a.m. on Friday in the Forest Valley Freewill Baptist Church, 1175 Upper Valley Pike, Springfield with Pastor Del Wallace officiating. Robert Shipley

Robert Daniel “Bob” Shipley, 84, of Ironton, passed away Sunday, Jan. 22, 2012, at Community Hospice Care Center, Ashland, Ky. The Ohiopyle, Pa., native was born May 20, 1927, to the late Mildred Plume. Bob is survived by his wife, Georgia (Sesher) Shipley.

Bob is a World War II Navy Veteran. He also worked as a supervisor of maintenance and planning at Allied Chemical Corporation where he retired in 1984. He was a member St. Joseph Church in Ironton.

In addition to his wife, Bob is survived by a daughter, Mitzi (Sesher) Shipley of Bellefontaine; two stepsons, David (Sandy) Sesher of Ironton and Ron (Sandy) Sesher of Port Clinton; a granddaughter, Dana (Pete) Shipley Carter of Ironton; three grandsons, Tony and Trevor Sesher, both of Columbus, and Tyler Sesher of Dayton; three great grandsons, Nathan Hale, Shane Hale and Eli Carter, all of Ironton; four stepgranddaughters; two stepgrandsons; and six stepgreat-grandchildren.

In addition to his mother, Bob is preceded in death by first wife, Veronica “Polly” Shipley; a brother, Ernest Shipley; and a son, Daniel Shipley.

Funeral services will be noon Thursday at the Tracy Brammer-Monroe Funeral Home with Pastor Rob Hale officiating. Interment will follow in Calvary Cemetery with military graveside rites by the American Legion Post #433. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home with a prayer service offered by Father David Huffman at 5 p.m.

Ralph Nance

ASHLAND, Ky. — Ralph “Bud” Paul Nance, 91, of Ashland, died Sunday, Jan. 22, 2012, at the Community Hospice Care Center in Ashland. The Ironton native was born Nov. 5, 1920, the son of the late Jess and Dottie Beals Nance. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Wanda Gool Nance.

Mr. Nance was a graduate of Dawson-Bryant High School and a U.S. WWII Navy veteran. He was a former supervisor with Ashland Oil and a member of the South Point Christian Church.

In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by a brother, William Nance.

He is survived by a brother, Robert Nance of Ironton; a sister, Rose Case of Ironton; a niece and his caregiver, Connie Douglas of Ashland.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Phillips Funeral Home with Minister Jerry Greenslait officiating. Burial will follow in Woodland Cemetery with military graveside rites by the VFW Post 8850. Visitation will be Wednesday from 10 a.m. until the time of the service at the funeral home.
