Symmes Valley rolls past Oaks

OAK HILL - The Symmes Valley Vikings might have started late, but once they got started the Oak Hill Oaks couldn't slow them down.

The Vikings trailed 6-0 early, then scored 41 straight points en route to a 41-20 win over the Oaks Friday in the Southern Ohio Conference opener for both teams.

The Oaks got on the scoreboard first as Chase Allman hit Cody Farmer with a 39-yard touchdown pass.

The Vikings answered with an 82-yard, 12-play drive that culminated with a 6-yard pass from Chris Capper to Kyle Meadows. The conversion kick by Meadows gave the Vikings a 7-6 lead.

"I was pleased with the way the kids responded and then we settled in and played defense. We did a better job with our reads and we were focused," Vikings coach Rusty Webb said.

"I thought our kids played well the whole game. We only had a few mental breakdowns and that's a sign of an improving team."

The Vikings racked up 371 total yards with 300 coming on the ground. Capper ran for 73 yards and completed all four of his passes for 71 yards.

"We're happy with the way our passing game is coming. Chris Capper did another excellent job running our offense. He's done a better job with our passing game and we're going to need that down the road," Webb said.

Derek Carpenter ran for 72 yards on seven attempts and Matt Owens had 70 yards on eight rushes in the balanced Symmes Valley offense.

Defensively, the Vikings held a running back under 100 yards for the first time this season.

"Our defensive line did a better job controlling the line of scrimmage, and our offensive line did a good job. Any time you run for 300 yards you're offensive line and backs are doing a pretty good job," Webb said.

Leading 7-6, Capper extended the lead with a 55-yard scamper just before the end of the quarter and it was 13-6.

Owens ran one yard for a touchdown in the second quarter that ignited a 28-point scoring burst by the Vikings.

Capper hit Kirk Shipley with a 40-yard touchdown pass and Owens ran for the conversion to make it 27-6.

Meadows and Capper hooked up on their second scoring pass play, this time for 11 yards as the lead went to 34-6.

Carpenter then put the final nail in the coffin with an 18-yard run with just 1:45 left in the half and it was 41-6 at the break.

The Oaks got a pair of touchdowns against the Vikings second team on a 50-yard pass from Allman to Farmer and an 8-yard run by Chris Dupree on the final play of the game.

Symmes Valley, 3-2 and 1-0, hosts Green Friday in a league game.
