CHESHIRE - The Coal Grove Hornets made it a short work day.

The Hornets built a big lead in the middle of the third quarter and turned the game over to the backups in a 35-6 rout of the River Valley Raiders Friday to open Ohio Valley Conference play for both teams.

"We played well. The offensive line did another good job and Justin ran the ball well. Gary Moore had another excellent ball game and Chris Chaffin and Trent Blankenship came in and did well. When you're backs get yardage, the line is blocking well," Hornets coach Dave Lucas said.

Justin Hyland had 20 carries for 152 yards and scored four touchdowns - all in the first half - to lead the Hornets ground game. Coal Grove rushed 65 times for 409 yards.

Fullback Gary Moore had a big game for the Hornets with 94 yards on 14 carries and a touchdown. A total of eight different runners carried the ball.

Coal Grove (5-1, 1-0) held the Raiders to 137 total yards for the game. The Raiders did not get a first down until late in the third quarter.

Hyland ran 11 yards for a touchdown with 5:38 left in the first quarter. He added the conversion to make it 8-0.

The lead went to 16-0 just before the end of the quarter on a 1-yard run by Hyland who also ran for the conversion.

Hyland had two more touchdown runs in the second quarter covering 18 and 1 yards. Neither conversion attempt was successful.

Coal Grove scored on its first drive of the second half as Moore pounded his way into the end zone from 2 yards out. Nick Bazell kicked the extra point and it was 35-0.

"The kids are playing consistent right now and that's the key to the whole thing," Lucas said.

River Valley (1-5, 0-1) managed to avoid the shutout with 6:46 to play when Bryan Morrow hit Ryan Henry with a 30-yard touchdown pass.
