Council to consider modification of dump program

Ironton City Council Thursday night will consider a resolution to restrict the city’s free dump program to two times a year.
Right now, city residents may dump unwanted items at either the city garage or at the Rumpke, Inc. recycling and waste transfer center free of charge weekly. This is in addition to the weekly curbside pickup the city offers.
Between the regular curbside pickup and the free dumping at the city garage and Rumpke, the city pays $273,000 annually for refuse collection. The ordinance would, if approved, limit the free dumping to the two times a year the city sponsors a community-wide cleanup, in the spring and in the fall.
The issue of free dumping at the city garage and at Rumpke, Inc., and the cost to the city was one of the issues addressed by Mayor Rich Blankenship in his discussion on the budget with the city council finance committee last week. That ordinance will be given first reading.
City council will also give first reading to ordinances to purchase chemicals and construction materials for 2012. An ordinance to enter into a contract with the Multi-Agency Radio Communication System (MARCS) is also on the agenda for first reading.
Council may give second reading to an agreement with Ironton Little League.
Council will consider four resolutions. One would adopt and implement the Disaster Mitigation Act of 2012; a second would authorize funds for Ironton In Bloom; a third continues the city’s participation in the Ohio Department of Transportation Cooperative Purchasing Program and a fourth would transfer ownership of a plot of land to the city for use as a pocket park. The land was once part of the old River Valley Health System hospital property and is now being subdivided into housing lots.
The city council meeting is at 6 p.m. It will follow a 5 p.m. finance committee meeting. All three health insurance providers that submitted bids to provide the city’s health insurance for the coming year will meet with the finance committee to answer questions about their bids.
