Boggs in as commission pres for second term
Les Boggs will remain president of the Lawrence County Commission following its organizational meeting Monday morning.
Boggs was nominated by Commissioner Bill Pratt. This will be his second term as president. The commission also retained its current schedule with work session to begin at 9:30 a.m. Tuesdays and the regular meeting at 9:30 a.m. Thursday.
Commissioner Paul Herrell was not at the meeting because he is on vacation.
“I appreciate the confidence that my fellow commissioners have in me and I will continue to try to represent the commission and the county the best way that I can,” Boggs said.

BCPL hosts Macho Monday movie
ASHLAND, Ky. — It’s Macho Monday Movie Night at Boyd County Public Library, with a free showing of “The Hangover Part II” on Monday at the main branch.
The movie starts at 5:30 p.m. Admission is $2, or bring a food item to share. All money collected will be used to purchase pizza and other refreshments. Women are welcome to attend, but the program is not intended for children.
“The Hangover Part II,” rated R, takes place two years after the fateful Vegas trip in the first “Hangover” movie. This time, the boys go to Thailand for Stu’s wedding, but, of course, things go terribly awry.
The Macho Movie in February is “Real Steel.”

BCPL winter craft program focuses on popular film song
CANNONSBURG, Ky. — A free winter crafting program at the Kyova Branch of Boyd County Public Library focuses on the song, “My Favorite Things.”
The program starts at 5:30 p.m. on Monday at the branch, located in the Kyova Mall across from Elder-Beerman.
It will include a sampling of crafts mentioned in the song from the 1959 Rodgers and Hammerstein musical, “The Sound of Music.” Participants will make the “cream colored ponies” and “silver white winters.” There will also be demonstrations of other items mentioned in the song.

South Point alum returning from army deployment
Army Capt. Derek M. Mitchell is returning to the U.S. after a deployment to Southwest Asia in support of Operation Enduring Freedom or Operation Iraqi Freedom.
Operation Enduring Freedom is the official name given to anti-terrorism military operations involving U.S. troops and allied coalition partners.
Active duty and reserve component members from all branches of the U.S. armed forces have been deployed to support the war against global terrorism outside the borders of the United States. U.S. troops serve in South, Southwest and Central Asia, the Arabian peninsula, the Horn of Africa, islands in the Pacific, and Europe.
Operation Iraqi Freedom is the official name given to anti-terrorism military operations involving U.S. troops and allied coalition partners serving in the Iraq and in the Iraqi Theater of Operations.
Mitchell is an assistant operations officer assigned to the 4th Squadron, 4th Cavalry Regiment at Fort Riley, Kan. The captain has served in the military for three years.
He is the son of George and Brenda Mitchell of Westview Drive, South Point.
Mitchell graduated in 2002 from South Point High School, and received a bachelor of science in 2008 from United States Military Academy, West Point, N.Y.
St. Joe grad makes dean’s list at OSU
Sara Burcham of South Point was named to the Dean’s List at The Ohio State University for the Autumn Quarter of 2011.
Sara is a sophomore in the food business management program working towards a bachelor of science in food business, with special interest in food processing, chemistry, consumer marketing and business management, with a minor in dance.
Sara also serves as an office assistant in the residence hall, fundraising committee chair for Dance Connections, sustainability chair for Hall Council, a member of the Relay for Life and Student Conduct Board and also a welcome leader coordinator for The Ohio State University.
Sara is the daughter of Margie Burcham of South Point and granddaughter of Dale and Betty Burcham of Proctorville.
She is a 2010 graduate of St. Joseph’s Central Catholic High School in Ironton.
