A Lawrence County Common Pleas Jury may not have cared for Wanda Jenkins, but the voters in the Rock Hill School District apparently like her very well.
Jenkins took an early lead during Tuesday evening's school board race and never relinquished it. At the end of the evening, Jenkins had collected 1,476 votes. Former board member Carl Gene Large will join Jenkins on the board. Large was the second highest vote getter, garnering 1,421 votes, thereby taking the seat of board member Troy Hardy, who placed fourth out of five candidates, collecting 1,104 votes.
The victory was apparently sweet for Jenkins: Last month a Lawrence County Common Pleas Court jury voted to remove her and fellow board members Lavetta Sites and Paul R. Johnson in response to a lawsuit by the group Citizens Against Poor Spending (CAPS). That group charged all three board members were guilty of misfeasance, malfeasance and nonfeasance of office, a claim all three denied and continue to deny.
Asked how she felt, Jenkins replied that she felt “great.”
“I think this shows what the public wanted. I'm so excited, I can hardly believe it,” Jenkins said. “I want to thank all the people in the community who supported me, who voted for me. I appreciate them.”
Two newcomers to the Rock Hill slate of candidates were William Brian Phillips, who finished third with 1,129 votes and David Scott, who finished fifth with 918 votes.
