The trial of an Upper Township man charged with murder and felonious assault is expected to begin Monday in Lawrence County Common Pleas Court.
William Cooper, 48, 2827 County Road 21, Ironton, is accused of shooting and killing Scott Marcum of Ironton and shooting and seriously injuring Orlan “J.R.” Harper Jr., also of Ironton.
Cooper was arrested July 2 at a house on Township Road 151, off Lawrence Street Road.
The shootings reportedly stemmed from an alleged altercation earlier that day involving Cooper's son, William “Bub” Cooper Jr.,
and the two victims. Lawrence County Sheriff's detective Aaron Bollinger testified during a July 7 preliminary hearing in Ironton Municipal Court that the younger Cooper had told his father about the incident. Then he left the Cooper residence after threatening to kill the others involved in the altercation, Bollinger testified.
When the senior Cooper went looking for his son, he found him at the Fred Sisler residence, where the shooting occurred.
Bollinger testified that the elder Cooper shot Marcum and Harper after they allegedly pinned him against his car; but Bollinger said the surviving victim told a different story, that William Cooper Sr., had gotten out of his car at the Sisler residence and began firing his gun.
Lawrence County Common Pleas Judge Frank McCown will preside over the trial, which is expected to last two to three days. Cooper remained in county jail last week on a $1 million bond.
