Raiders shoot by Hornets

COAL GROVE — There was not power failure in the Hornets gym Tuesday, but it was still lights out.

The River Valley Raiders used some hot-shooting early in each half to open up a big lead and went on to beat the Coal Grove Hornets 76-59 in an Ohio Valley Conference game.

The Raiders hit eight 3-pointers as they built big leads en route to their fifth win in seven games.

“They just shot the lights out,” Hornets coach Mike Waller said. “They’re capable of doing that and they did.”

Michael Cordell had 19 points, Bryan Morrow 14, Jason Jones 12 and Ryan Henry added 10 to lead the Raiders.

Randy Wise scored 19 points to lead the Hornets (2-3, 0-2 OVC). Evan Melvin scored 16 points, Tyler Branch 11 points and Adam Bare had 10 points and 11 rebounds.

Cordell had six points in the first quarter as River Valley jumped out to an 11-0 lead. It was 16-3 at one point and the Raiders led 22-8 lead.

Melvin has six points in the second quarter as Coal Grove cut the deficit to 29-24 at the half.

Melvin scored six more points in the third quarter but Henry and Cordell got seven points each as River Valley opened up a 53-38 lead.

Wise connected on three 3-pointers and scored 12 points in the fourth quarter Tyler Thompson scored six of his eight points in the fourth quarter to help counter Wise’s output.

“They got up on us and we just couldn’t come back,” Waller said.

The Hornets play at Ironton St. Joseph Friday.
