One successful event apparently deserves another. And another.

Organizers of this year’s Ironton Policeman’s Ball said they will organize more such affairs in the future, since this year’s ball was so successful.

“We had probably 175 people attend it,” said Pam Neal Wagner, president of the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 75. “It went very well.”

Wagner said plans are underway now to make the policeman’s ball an annual event, as it used to be years ago.

It has been more than 10 years since the FOP had undertaken such a project.

Wagner said she appreciated the local businesses, which donated goods and services to make the event successful.

“We couldn’t have done it without them, Spriggs Distributing and the Knights of Columbus and Printing Express. Anything we needed, they were there,” she said.

The event was a fundraiser — proceeds will go to the county’s two K-9 units and to drug education programs throughout the year.

Both the Ironton Police Department and the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office have K-9 units.

The Ironton Police Department has “Ace,” a German shepherd, as its crime dog. The Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office has “Max,” a Belgian malinois, as its crime dog. Both K-9 units are used for numerous police tasks, such as drug sweeps and tracking suspects.

The Policeman’s Ball was Dec. 17 at the Knights of Columbus.
