WAYNE, W.Va. — This time the road wasn’t so kind.

After winning three of their first four games on the road, the St. Joseph Flyers found a bad road trip with a 63-56 loss to the Wayne Pioneers Friday night.

“They were physical. It was a different style of basketball for us. We had our shots at the end, but we got careless with the basketball,” coach Kevin Hacker said.

“We played pretty well, but they were big and we had some matchup problems. The thing I like was the fact we didn’t back down. We stayed in there and battled.”

The Pioneers used the 30-point performance of Nick Newell to get the win. Andrew Woods added 10 points.

St. Joseph (4-1) had three players in double figures led by Alex Swarts with 17 points and 11 rebounds.

Cory Lewis had a solid all-around game with 15 points, four rebounds, six assists, three steals and a blocked shot. Michael Basedow added 11 points, three assists and two steals.

Newell scored nine points in the first quarter as Wayne took a 16-10 lead. Basedow had half the Flyers total.

St. Joseph hit 7-of-12 floor shots in the second quarter and Swarts scored nine points as the Flyers rallied to take a 31-28 halftime lead.

The Pioneers closed to within 42-41 after three quarters and then Newell scored 11 points in the fourth quarter including 4-of-4 from the foul line. Wayne was 6-of-11 from the line down the stretch.

Lewis scored 10 points in the quarter for the Flyers, but several costly turnovers prevented any hopes of staying unbeaten.

The Flyers play Coal Grove on Friday.
