BALTIMORE — All things considered, it was a good day.

The Fairland Lady Dragons picked up an impressive win as they beat the Delaware Hayes Lady Pacers 65-60 on Tuesday in the Liberty Union Yule Classic.

“It was a good win,” said Fairland coach Jon Buchanan. “They were the most athletic team we’ve played. We went on the road to a place we’ve never played against a good Division I team and got a win.”

Terra Stapleton was a key factor in the Lady Dragons’ win as she scored 30 points, grabbed 15 rebounds and blocked 4 shots.

Chandler Fulks had 12 points and 4 assists as Fairland improved to 7-0. Kayla Swiger added 8 points and 3 steals.

Delaware Hayes (3-4) had four players in double figures. Paige Stimmel and Julie Bauer scored 14 each, Kristen McMillan 13 and Keshawna Ximines had 10 points and 17 rebounds.

Stapleton scored 8 points in the first quarter as Fairland took a 14-8 lead.

Bauer hit three 3-pointers in the second quarter as the Pacers rallied to trail just 34-32 at the half.

The Lady Dragons outscored Delaware 15-7 in the third quarter to build a 49-39 lead.

Stapleton scored 9 more points in the fourth quarter as Fairland led by as many as 16, but the Lady Pacers began hitting long-range shots and converted 5 of 6 free throws to ignite a comeback. The Lady Dragons didn’t help their own cause as they missed five fouls shots.

“We hurt ourselves by not making free throws. Their ability to hit 3-pointers and our missed free throws made it closer than we liked,” said Buchanan.

Fairland will play Liberty Union Wednesday in the second day of the Yule Classic. Liberty Union beat Mount Vernon 50-34.
