Lady Vikes rally late to win No. 18

AID — Trailing in the seventh inning, the Symmes Valley Lady Vikings needed a rally.
They got it.
The Lady Vikings, ranked No. 2 in the coaches Division III poll, rallied for 13 runs in the top of the seventh to beat the Ironton Lady Fighting Tigers 20-8 Wednesday.
“Wild wasn’t the word for it. It was a game of many errors, many hits and many runs. We just got hot in the last inning,” Lady Vikings coach Jeff “Odie” Estep said.
The Lady Vikings then scored 13 runs on eight hits in the seventh inning.
Mindy Shope and Kayla Justice each had a two-run single, Tasha Pointer a two-run double and Emily Bowling a three-run homer to highlight the uprising.
Symmes Valley took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first.
Mandy Estep was hit by a pitch, moved up on a wild pitch and came home on a hit by Bowling.
Ironton came back to score six runs in the bottom of the inning.
Mercedes Crockrel and Nikki Harbolt singled, Kelsey Bronson was safe on an error and Edi Taylor singled home a run.
Sara Hacker was safe on an error and Julie Belville singled in two runs. Tausha Collins had a run-scoring single, Lindsey Mooney grounded into a fielder’s choice and Sara Jones was safe on an error with Collins scoring.
Symmes Valley got a run in the second inning.
Haily Pelletier was safe on an error, Shope and Bryana Hawthorne each hit into a fielder’s choice and Mandy Estep singled in the run.
Ironton got the run back in the third.
Harbolt singled to start the inning, Bronson and Taylor each hit into a fielder’s choice but Hacker delivered a run-scoring single.
The Lady Vikings got five runs in the fifth to tie the game.
Bowling singled, Libby Ash walked, Pointer was safe on an error and Pelletier was safe on a fielder’s choice as a run scored.
Hawthorne singled home two runs, Julie Carter was safe on an error as a run scored and Mandy Estep singled in the final run.
Ironton answered with a home run by Harbolt in the bottom of the inning to take an 8-7 lead.
Symmes Valley, 18-2, hosts Portsmouth Clay Tuesday in a crucial Southern Ohio Conference game.
