Lady Tigers knock off Portsmouth, 5-2

It’s not crazy glue, but it sticks together pretty good.

The Ironton Lady Fighting Tigers continued to play well as they beat the Portsmouth Lady Trojans 5-2 Friday.

“I feel the girls are starting to come together and mature as a team,” Ironton coach Missy Fields said.

“There is a lot of talent in these young ladies that were are seeing as they are starting to believe in themselves.”

Sara Jones fired a four-hitter as she struck out seven and did not walk a batter to get the win.

Kelsey Bronson, Edi Taylor, Tausha Collins and Julie Belville all went 2-3 as Ironton collected nine hits.

After Portsmouth took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first, Ironton came back with two runs in the bottom of the inning.

Bronson singled, stole second base and scored on Taylor’s base hit. Taylor stole second and scored on a throwing error.

Portsmouth tied the game in the third, but Ironton came right back with a run in the bottom of the inning when Mercedes Crockrel walked and scored on a hit by Bronson.

Ironton got a pair of insurance runs in the sixth inning as Taylor and Belville singled and Collins had a two-run double.

The Lady Trojans got two runners on in the seventh, but Jones struck out the final two batters to seal the win.

Ironton hosts Ashland, Ky., Monday.
