SOUTH POINT

— What the South Point Pointers did was okay with coach Gary Norris, but it’s what they didn’t do that had him scratching his head.

Although the South Point Poiners came away with a 50-44 win over the Coal Grove Hornets Friday in an Ohio Valley Conference game, Norris was still disappointed.

“We didn’t take care of the ball. We didn‘t play well with the lead,” Norris said. “But we managed to find a way to win and that’s a positive.”

Coal Grove (3-7, 0-3) nearly pulled off the upset, but the Hornets downfall came in the third quarter when they scored just three points.

“Our kids played pretty well overall. We came out and missed some shots we hit in the first and second quarters. We had good shots in the third quarter, we just didn’t make them,” Hornets coach Mike Waller said.

Heath Bridges and Jeremiah Taylor had four points each in the first quarter to offset seven by Evan Melvin as South Point took a 15-10 lead.

Matt Melvin scored all eight of his points in the second quarter as Coal Grove got within 28-25 at the break.

Bridges had four points in the third quarter as Coal Grove managed only three points and it was 39-28.

Coal Grove climbed back into the game and trailed by only four points, but South Point’s J.T. Terry made two foul shots with 38 seconds left that put the Pointers up by six.

Evan Melvin hit a 3-pointer to get the Hornets within three, but Coal Grove was forced to foul and the Pointers connected on 9 of 13 from the foul line to seal the win.

Terry made 5 of 6 from the line down the stretch.

“They hit the big shots and got the rebounds when they needed them,” Waller said.

Terry had seven points in the fourth, Evan Melvin got seven for the Hornets.

Bridges scored 13 points and Terry 11 points and eight rebounds to lead the Pointers (4-4, 1-2 OVC). Taylor had 17 rebounds while Chase McWhorter had five assists.

Evan Melvin led Coal Grove (3-7, 0-3) with 19 points and Adam Bare grabbed 10 rebounds.
