COLUMBUS (AP) — Ohio State offensive tackle Alex Boone was issued a citation alleging he was driving under the influence early Sunday, coach Jim Tressel said.

The 18-year-old will enter the athletics department’s drug and alcohol counseling program as a first-time offender, according to Tressel’s statement released by the school.

Circumstances of the citation weren’t clear. Columbus police, campus police and the Franklin County jail could not immediately produce records identifying Boone on Sunday.

Boone notified school officials himself, Ohio State spokesman Steve Snapp said.

‘‘He called one of the coaches to let him know,’’ Snapp said.

Boone will not miss practice or playing time but could face other sanctions, Tressel said.

Coaches told players Saturday to be in bed by 10 p.m., Tressel said.

‘‘I am disappointed that message did not get through to everyone,’’ he said.

The 6-foot-8, 315-pound Boone played in 11 games last fall as a true freshman out of Lakewood St. Edward and was chosen Ohio State’s most outstanding first-year offensive player.
