McDERMOTT — The Chesapeake Panthers took a trip to the district tournament Tuesday. Or did they?

Chesapeake turned in a sluggish performance as they lost 9-3 to the Belpre Eagles in the Division III district semifinals.

“We just didn’t show up. I think I left the bat bag at home. Mentally, we just weren’t in the game,” Chesapeake coach Joe Waugh said.

The Panthers were guilty of four errors and numerous other mistakes in their first trip to the district tournament in 20 seasons.

“We didn’t play very relaxed,” Waugh said.

The game started well for the Panthers who scored a run in the top of the first inning.

An error enabled Clinton Baise to reach second base. Cory Methax hit a ground ball to second base that was thrown away at first base allowing Baise to score.

Belpre came back to take the lead with two runs in the bottom of the inning.

Dustin Adams walked, stole second base and Zach Alkire was safe on an error. Adams scored on a passed ball and Alkire came around to score following two more passed balls.

The Eagles erupted for six runs in the second inning.

Justin Winer singled to start the inning. John Loge was safe on an error to put runners on the corners. Adams walked to load the bases and Alkire singled in a run. Jordan Thornhill singled home another run and a passed ball scored a third run.

Nate Watson had a two-run single and Mike Waderker struck out but reached on a missed third strike as the final run scored.

The Panthers got a run back in the fourth inning.

Baise beat out an infield single and stole second base, Cory Methax reached on a missed third strike and Cody Methax had a run-scoring single.

Chesapeake got a run in the top of the sixth inning.

Basie bunted for a hit, stole second base and came home on a hit by Bryon Huff.

But Belpre got the run back in the bottom of the inning.

Watson doubled to open the inning, moved to third base on an error and came home on a passed ball.

The Panthers finished the season 14-8 with their first outright title in 40 years.

“It’s always tough to end on a losing note, but the kids have had a good season and they played well. I can’t be anything but pleased with what these kids did this season,” Waugh said.

Belpre moves to 11-8.
