PROCTORVILLE — Volunteers are needed to give a little TLC to a heavily traveled road in the eastern end of Lawrence County.

Operation Tidy-Up Lawrence County — commonly known at TLC — will have a community cleanup beginning at 9 a.m. Saturday. The cleanup will begin at the Chesapeake Community Center and will continue down State Route 7 through Proctorville — roughly from the Robert C. Byrd Bridge to the 29th Street Bridge.

“We live in a beautiful area. We have the river and the mountains; it’s just really nice. But, we need to take pride in our communities and keep them clean,” said Taunya Wilson, one of the founders of the group.

Wilson said TLC’s slogan is “Restore Pride Don’t Let Litter Lie.”

The group has adopted a two-mile section of State Route 7 through the Ohio Department of Transportation. Through the Adopt-A-Highway program, TLC is required to pick up litter along the road four times a year. This is the third time has had a cleanup; the first was in spring and the other in the fall.

“I think a lot of times people who live here get used to seeing the trash along the roadways. They just don’t think a lot about it,” said Wilson, who just moved to the area about four years ago. “But, it’s time that we stop that. We need to be a voice for this end of the county.”

Wilson said the county spent nearly $120,000 collecting litter last year. If more volunteers would get involved with TLC, Wilson said, the tax dollars could be used more wisely on other community projects.

TLC is hoping to get 100 volunteers to come out at 9 a.m. Saturday at the Chesapeake Community Center shelter house. The event is expected last until about noon. ODOT will provide vests and bags, but volunteers need to bring their own gloves.
