OAK HILL — It’s a three-peat.

Getting some extra efforts and points from some unexpected places, the South Point Pointers won their third straight Division II district track championship Saturday.

“We felt it would be a tight one. We had a couple of guys come through and get us some more points than we expected,” Pointers coach Randy Smith said.

The Pointers were only expecting points from the field events, relays, hurdles and 400-meter dash.

“We had two freshmen high jumpers (Quay) Logan and (Drew) Lynd who did well, and our 4×100 (relay) finished higher than I thought. We got good points in the 400 that helped. The rest got pretty much what we expected,” Smith said.

The Pointers finished with 101 points while Wheelersburg had 85 points to place second. The Fairland Dragons were third with 74.5 points and the Ironton Fighting Tigers were fifth with 54 points. Rock Hill was 13th with 21 points.

Benji Smith claimed the 110-meter hurdles (15.0) for South Point.

The Pointers David Absher was second in the 400 (53.9). Chris Smith was second in the discus at 156-1, just four inches behind Wheelersburg’s Nick Warner.

Logan won the long jump (20-3.75) and was third in the high jump (5-10).Lynd was fourth (5-10), Zach Norris second in the pole vault (11-6).

Aaron Patterson, Jerrell Dean, John Crager and Absher won the 4×200 relay (1:34.9). Absher, Patterson, Norris and Josh Jones ran a 3:35.4 to win the 4×400. Jones won the 300 hurdles (42.1).

The 4×100 relay team of Patterson, Dean, Norris and Crager placed second (45.1).

Ironton got a pair of first place finishes from Marc Carter who ran a 2:04.1 to win the 800 just one race removed from the 400 that he won easily at 51.8 seconds.

“I was afraid I was going to lose. I was tired and my leg was hurting. I was okay when I ran them on Wednesday,” Carter said.

Lukas Morris was the surprise champion in the high jump as the freshman clear 6-1. John Pemberton was a double qualifier as he placed fourth in the discus (142-1) and second in the shot put with a personal-best heave of 53-1.75.

Fairland’s Chase Siford went 12-0 to win the pole vault. Aaron Ward was second in the 110-meter hurdles (15.7) as well as the 300 hurdles (42.6). Sifford, Travis Jones, Zach Pemberton and Ward were third in the 4×200 relay (1:38.9).

The Dragons Kyle Kincaid was fourth in the pole vault (10-6). Pemberton took third in the long jump (20-3). Chuck Wentz (10:28.3) was second in the 3200 run and third in the 1600 (4:41.3).

Rock Hill got a chunk of its points from Jason Massie who was second in the 100 (11.1) and 200 (22.9). Wes Pierson was fourth in the 110 hurdles (16.4).
