CHESAPEAKE — Dueling pitchers.

Chesapeake’s P.J. Rase and Coal Grove’s Randy Wise matched each other almost pitch for pitch before little mistakes broke through and gave the Panthers a 2-1 win Friday over Coal Grove in an Ohio Valley Conference game.

Rase struck out seven, walked one and hit a batter as he allowed just four hits. Wise had four strikeouts, one walk and gave up only three hits as he threw just 63 pitches.

“Both pitchers pitched a great game. They kept batters offstride,” Hornets coach John Jones said. “There were a couple

of little mistakes that decided the outcome. It was a well played game.”

After three scoreless innings, Chesapeake got its two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning.

Cory Methax walked, stole second, went to third base when Cody Methax beat out an infield hit and scored on a wild pitch. Kersten Harris hit a fly ball that was dropped in the outfield allowing the second run to score.

Coal Grove got its run in the seventh inning.

With one out, Tyler Branch and Zach Murphy had base hits. After a fielder’s choice, Mason Schug was safe on an error as a run score.

But with runners at second and third, Rase struck out the final batter on a 3-2 count to end the game.

Cody Methax was 2-3 for the Panthers while Schug went 2-3 to pace the Hornets.

Coal Grove is now 3-2 and 1-2 in the OVC. Chesapeake improves to 5-0 and 3-0.
