An Ironton High School student will walk away from next week’s graduation with a $1,000 scholarship, compliments of the Tri-State Artistic Friends and the Moose Family Center.

Meanwhile, registration for and judging in the TAF’s second annual Memorial Weekend Art Exhibit is set for Saturday at the Ironton City Center.

The Moose members donated $1,000 to the TAF for its scholarship at the request of Cristianne Murphy, who is the organization’s president.

“I am so excited about this, you have no idea,” Cristianne Murphy said. “I’m thrilled the school levy passed and I’m thrilled we have the athletic program we have here, but some kids are not athletic and there is nothing for them.”

Moose member Ted Murphy said this is one of a number of community service projects his organization undertakes each year and he hopes to make the scholarship donation an annual event.

“This is just something we do to take care of the community,” he said. “We do it to help people out.”

The scholarship will be chosen by TAF members and will be awarded at the Ironton High School graduation.

Like a lot of other Memorial Day weekend activities, preparation plans for the art exhibit are in overdrive in anticipation of this year’s event.

Those who wish to enter the exhibit may register from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday. Judging will be from 1-4 p.m. and a reception for artists, purchase award patrons and donors will follow at 5 p.m. The actual exhibit will be next weekend, May 26-29.

Murphy said this year, The Ironton Cooperative Club will present the “Spirit of Women in Ironton’s History” award to a student entrant. The winner of that award will receive $50 and a plaque.

Again this year, prizes will be awarded for Best of Show and for first, second and third place winners in five categories: landscape/seascape, portrait, still life/ floral, miscellaneous and abstract.
