PROCTORVILLE — Keeping local residents safe in their homes and on their farms is the goal of an event Saturday at the Lawrence County Fairgrounds.

The Lawrence Soil and Water Conservation District and the Lawrence County Farm Bureau are sponsoring “Safety Adventures Day”. This is the first time for the event, which is free event, open to the public and will begin at 10 a.m. and conclude at 4 p.m.

There will be a variety of door prizes, food and events, including Homeland Security, ATV, tractor rollover and animal handling and safety demonstrations, a mock accident and presentations from a variety of emergency and health organizations. The local 4-H groups and Future Farmers of America will also be on-hand for presentations.

So many times, organizers say, those in the agricultural community enter situations blindly, unaware of safety hazards or ways to prevent them.

Just one moment of looking away or being slightly careless could be very harmful, if not fatal, organizers say.

Greg Walker of Willow Wood said he hopes that the event will help to promote awareness about the need for safety in their everyday lives, even when they are performing everyday, mundane tasks that they have done many times. Walker lost most of his arm in a farming accident. He was injured when he arm was pulled into a tractor elevator.

“I want them (other local residents) to understand that equipment is so powerful. You’re not going to phase it,” said Walker, who was harvesting corn at the time he was injured. “I had done this many times before and I never thought nothing of it. I just wanted to get it done in a hurry.”
