Accepts resignations of head football, girl’s softball coaches

 

SOUTH POINT — South Point High School Baseball Coach Marty Patrick asked the board of Education Monday night whether the new baseball field behind the high school will be ready by baseball season or will the team have to play again at the old field that is in need of repair.

“I’ve got teams turning us down because of our facilities,” Patrick said. “I’m scheduling games now.”

Patrick said he has waited five years to play on a new field. The existing one is in need of repair.

Superintendent Ken Cook said since the contractor for the project walked off the job, the district has been in mediation over the problem but because of the legal implications, there is little that can be done at the moment.

“I spend 2-3 hours a day with the situation,” Cook said.

Board members told Patrick to get a list of what he needs to make the old field useable in case use of the new field is still on hold.

The board accepted the resignation of Doug Shilot, head football coach, and girl’s head softball coach Tara Layne, who has accepted another job in the Chicago area. Shilot gave no explanation for his departure in his resignation letter.

The board hired Dave Adams as assistant track coach at the middle school.

The board said goodbye to members Randy Keffer and Mary Cogan, whose terms expire at the end of the year.

The board agreed to have a budget meeting at 6 p.m. Jan.9, followed by the organizational meeting of the New Year, which is required by state law, and then the regular January meeting.
