An Oak Hill man was arrested after a two-hour standoff Saturday night at a residence at 23571 State Route 93 near the Jackson/Lawrence County line.

The Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office reports that Steven Evans, 36, assaulted his mother and threatened law enforcement officers who responded to the scene. Evans was also reportedly firing guns outside before taking the weapons and barricading himself in a bedroom of the house.

Attempts by the sheriff’s office, the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office, the Ohio Sate Highway Patrol, and the Oak Hill Police to negotiate with Evans were unsuccessful.

A “flash-bang” diversionary device was shot through a window of the residence. Deputies were then able to enter the residence and arrest Evans, who was found lying on a bed with a shotgun.

Evans has been charged with domestic violence, having weapons under disability, disrupting a public service, inducing panic and using weapons while intoxicated. Evans is on probation for a felony charge in Jackson County, so the sheriff’s office said more charges may be filed against him

Evans will be arraigned today in Ironton Municipal Court.
