With the landscaping work done and concrete down, Ironton’s soon-to-be skate park is a little closer to an opening date.

Workers completed the landscaping for the park, located at Fourth and Etna streets over the weekend, Mayor Rich Blankenship said.

Concrete work for the park was completed about two months ago.

The city also already has the skating equipment that will be installed in the park. Sometime this month a representative from the company that makes the equipment will supervise its installation.

“We want to do it the way the manufacturer calls for it,” Blankenship said.

Blankenship is planning to have a grand opening event for the park, though no tentative date has been set.

The park is being paid for with grant and donated funds.

Ironton City Council recently approved a resolution to transfer $30,000 from the general fund to the recreation department for the completion of the park.

The money will be reimbursed to the city through a grant from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources.

The council also recently heard the first reading of an ordinance establishing rules and regulations at the park. According to the proposed rules, the park will be open from 8 a.m. until 9 p.m. and park-goers will skate at their own risk.
