McDERMOTT — Some things you take with you. Other things you need to leave behind.
The South Point Pointers took some things with them to play the Northwest Mohawks Tuesday that coach Gary Norris didn’t want.
Down two points at halftime, Norris got his Pointers to leave the unwanted things in the locker room for the second half and the result was a 56-33 romp in a non-league game.
“We had a bad practice (Monday) and I think it carried over. I don’t know if it was the holiday season or the fact we haven’t played in 12 days, but it was the sort of thing we didn’t need,” said Norris.
South Point limited the Mohawks to just 5 points in each of the final two quarters in the comeback win.
“We didn’t do much different. We just weren’t focused in the first half,” said Norris. “Our defense picked up in the second half. We did some things in the second half that we’ve been working on.”
Chase McWhorter had 15 points, 10 rebounds and 3 assists to lead the Pointers (6-2). Beau Weed got 15 points and 9 rebounds, Chris Brown added 10 points and 5 steals while Joey Stevens grabbed 6 rebounds.
Northwest (3-5) took a 10-7 lead at the end of the first quarter and led 23-21 at the break.
McWhorter scored 6 points in the third quarter as South Point rallied to go ahead 38-28.
Brown got 5 more points in the fourth quarter as the Pointers coasted to the win.
South Point hosts River Valley Friday in an Ohio Valley Conference game.
