DUBLIN — Two local athletes were recognized as Wendy’s High School Heisman winners in Ohio.
Ironton senior Mandi Boykin and Coal Grove senior Smanatha Zornes were among the finalists as a High School Heisman Award winner.
Boykin is a three-sport standout in basketball, track and volleyball.
Zornes also competes in girls basketball, volleyball and softball.
There were two state winners — Jenny Maykut of Midpark in Brook Park and Robert Carlisle of James A. Garfield in Garrettsville — and nine male and female finalists from nearly 15,000 nominees nationwide.
Students nominated embody the spirit of the Heisman tradition through hard work and dedication on and off the field.
Nominees are judged by a select panel that includes past Wendy’s High School Heisman winners as well as leaders in education, business, athletics and community service.
This marks the 13th year for the Wendy’s Heisman Award.
