CHESHIRE — Talk about your takedown move.

The Fairland Dragons won 10 of 14 weight classes as they breezed to the championship in the Ohio Valley Conference Tri-match Tuesday.

Fairland was 2-0 against the Chesapeake Panthers and River Valley Raiders.

Picking up victories for the Dragons were Chuckie Wentz at 112 pounds, Garrett Wireman in the 119-pound class, Will Livley at 135 pounds, Eric Denney in the 140-pound division, Zac Fannin at 145, Michael Evans claimed the 152 class, Mason Graves was first at 160, Jevon Hayes won the 171-pound class, Stephen Walker was the 189 champion and Ian Russell came away as the winner at 215.

Chesapeake had three champions that included Chris Myers at 103 pounds, Thomas Lewis in the 130-pound class, and Brad Wiley in the 285-pound division.

River Valley’s lone champion was Tyler Canaday in the 125 class.

John Deno Classic

ATHENS, Ohio — The John Deno Classic wrestling tournament belonged to New Lexington as a team, but individually it was Fairland’s Michael Evans.

New Lexington was the team champion but it was Evans at 140 pounds who was the champion with a 13-6 win over Warrren’s Andrew Neill in the finals to earn the tournament’s Most Valuable Wrestler award.

Chuckie Wentz of Fairland fell to Cory Morgan of Trimble in the 112-pound finals to finish as runner-up. He was one of five Fairland wrestlers to place.

Fairland was ninth overall in the standings with 128 points, three behind Philo. Chesapeake was 16th with 52 points. New Lexington had 340.5 points, Fairfield Union 246 and Vinton County 238 to lead the 18-team field.

Garrett Wireman of Fairland was third in the 119-pound class with a 3-0 win over Caleb Haught of Northridge.

Joe Whitley of Fairland won a 7-4 decision over Rashawn Winfree of Harvest Prep to take fifth place at 215 pounds.

Finishing eighth was the Dragons Grady Starkey at 125 pounds.

Chesapeake had three wrestlers place led by Chris Myers and Brad Wiley.

Myers was sixth in the 103 division and Wiley took sixth place in the 285-pound class.

The Panthers Marcus Stallo took eighth in the 152-pound division.
