CHESHIRE — The Beatles once sang, “You Can’t Do That.”
The Chesapeake Lady Panthers defense might have been humming that tune Thursday as they blitzed the River Valley Lady Raiders 55-34 in the Ohio Valley Conference opener for both teams.
“We guarded them pretty well and didn’t let them get going. They can do a lot of stuff, but we did a good job taking some of that away so they couldn’t do that,” Chesapeake coach John McClung said.
Sarah Rucker scored 29 points and had 8 rebounds for Chesapeake (2-1). Rachel Harris scored 10 points and grabbed 7 rebounds while Lexy Staton had 9 assists and 5 steals.
Harris had 8 points in the first quarter as Chesapeake jumped in front 20-10.
Rucker scored 15 of Chesapeake’s 17 points in the second quarter and the defense held River Valley to 6 points as the lead ballooned to 37-16 at the break.
“Our defense was the key. Holly did another good job guarding the Carter girl. She’s their leading scorer and she had only 5 points,” McClung said. “And Lexy did another good job with assists.”
Staton got 5 points in the third quarter to make it 46-23 and Chesapeake coasted to the win.
