SOUTH POINT — Maybe South Point coach Marty Patrick is too patriotic. He’s hoping every day is Veterans’ Day.

Patrick thinks the key for the Pointers this season may lie with their six seniors.

“They’re capable of having a good season. With six seniors, there’s a lot of experience. They seem pretty intense. We just need to step up and take control,” Patrick said.

Chase McWhorter is back at first base, Beau Weed and Trenton Moore will share the second base job depending on who is pitching, Chris Brown will again be the shortstop and Anthony Ross is at third base.

Heath Bridges, Kyle Hughes and Jacob Seagraves are the outfield from left to right.

Junior Tyler Smith, a three-year letterman who is starting for the second year, will be the catcher with talented freshman Steven McClure the backup.

“We’re pretty solid there. Tyler’s bat is coming around and McClure will be a good one down the road,” Patrick said.

“We moved some people around and they’ve settle in. Our defense seems to be pretty solid,” Patrick said.

“We could be a good offensive team. We need some work, but that’s the thing I like about them. They like to take extra B.P. (batting practice).”

Moore is expected to be the ace of the staff, but Josh Esque, McWhorter, Weed, Ross and Seagraves are all capable of getting out hitters.

“The pitching is coming around. We’re working on our location. We have five or six who can throw,” Patrick said. “Moore had some shoulder problems last year, but so far, so good.”

Versatility will be an asset for the Pointers. Zach Jenkins, Jordan Fletcher and Weed can play in the infield or outfield.

“We have several guys that can play several positions, so that will help us,” Patrick said.
