Setting goals are easy. Getting them are the hard part.
Going into Tuesday’s game against Coal Grove, the St. Joseph Flyers set several goals including trying to match their inside game against the Hornets. Although it took some hard work, the Flyers accomplished their goal and obtained another goal with a 6-45 win.
“Our goal was to get them out of their zone, and we ran it well. We got the looks we wanted and our big guys got the looks,” St. Joseph head coach Kevin Hacker said. “Coal Grove is big and strong inside. We knew they would battle so we just had to battle harder.”
The Flyers inside play generated 30 points and 16 rebounds while limiting the Hornets inside tandem of Adam Bare and Tyler Branch to 17 points and 10 rebounds.
Jerrod Laber had 11 points and 6 rebounds, Ryan Staton 8 points and 5 boards, Caleb Blackburn 6 points and 5 rebounds and Clay Crum added 5 points for the Flyers.
Michael Basedow, who goes inside and out, led the Flyers with 14 points, 5 rebounds, 5 assists and 2 steals. Chad Harvey finished with a game-high 17 points along with 3 assists.
Bare had 10 points and 9 rebounds for the Hornets (0-13). Austin Willis scored 11 points including three trifectas.
The win snapped a four-game losing streak for the Flyers and put their record at 7-5.
“We played well as a team. We’ve played well the last few games but things haven’t fallen our way. We stay after it and kept working hard and it paid off,” Hacker said.
Laber scored 6 points with Harvey and Basedow getting 4 each as St. Joseph raced to an 18-5 lead at the end of the first quarter.
“St. Joe really hurt us on the boards. In the first quarter in particular we were getting one shot and they were getting two or three. That was pretty much the story. The game was won in the first quarter,” Hornets coach Mike Waller said.
“ We just didn’t come out fundamentally sound and to the little things like boxing out. We’ll just have to go to work again on those kind of things.”
St. Joseph stretched the lead to 35-17 at the half as Harvey scored 7 points and Basedow 5 in the second quarter. Bare and Willis combined for 11 points to keep the Hornets in the game.
Branch had all 7 of his points in the third quarter but it wasn’t enough as Basedow, Staton and Harvey had 13 points between them as the Flyers outscored the Hornets 20-13 to build a comfortable 55-30 lead.
Coal Grove outscored the Flyers 15-13 in the fourth quarter as Shannon Goodwin had 5 points. Crum scored 5 for St. Joseph.
