South Point squeezes way past Wellston

SOUTH POINT — The thought of bunting seemed suicidal to Anthony Ross.
Which is exactly what South Point coach Marty Patrick wanted.
Ross put down his first-ever suicide bunt to drive in the winning run as the Pointers edged the Wellston Golden Rockets 3-2 Friday in the Division III sectional finals.
“Ross didn’t want to do it because he never did it before. But he put down a perfect bunt,” said Patrick.
“I told Ross when they were changing pitchers that he got one swing and then we were going to squeeze. He put it right between the first baseman and the pitcher. It was a great bunt.”
With the win South Point improved to 19-1 and will now play Minford at 5 p.m. Thursday at Jackson in the district semifinals.
Wellston got both its runs to start the game.
L.B. Wilson singled to lead off and Casey Molihan reached on an error trying to put down a sacrifice bunt.
Matt Lockard followed with a base hit to score Wilson and Zach Fisher followed with a sacrifice fly to drive in Molihan.
The Pointers got a run back in the third inning when Jacob Seagraves belted a one-out solo home run.
South Point tied the game in the fourth inning.
Beau Weed singled, stole second base, Trenton Moore walked and Weed stole third base. Chase McWhorter hit a sacrifice fly as Weed came home.
The Pointers got the winning run in the bottom of the sixth.
Chris Brown singled and promptly stole second and third bases. An out later, Ross then put down his squeeze bunt that went for a base hit.
“We got timely hits. That’s what it takes sometimes,” said Patrick.
South Point had just four hits, but Moore held Wellston just five hits as he pitched a complete game.
Wellston finishes 18-9.
