Short-handed Ironton falls to Warren

WARREN — Imagine Pat Garrett in a gunfight with Billy the Kid only Garrett has just two bullets in his gun.

Not much of a fair fight, huh?

That’s probably how the Ironton Fighting Tigers felt Friday night as they fell 66-60 to the Vincent Warren Warriors in a Southeastern Ohio Athletic League game.

Chad Miller and Andy Colegrove were both restricted to the bench in the first half due to early foul trouble and, coupled with the absence of Tyler Shoemaker and Drew Kuehne due to illnesses, Ironton was at a big disadvantage.

“Our lineup was all messed up. We had guys playing positions they should have to play or playing longer than we wanted. We had a couple of other guys who were sick who played,” Ironton coach Mark LaFon said.

Warren held an early lead before a steal and layup by Marc Carter tied the game at 10-10. Alstan Carter then got a steal that he converted into a layup and Ironton was up 12-10 at the 1:53 mark.

But Tyler Horner nailed a 3-pointer to put Warren up 13-12 and the lead was 14-12 at the end of the quarter.

Ironton tied the game twice to begin the second quarter, but Chris Peckens hit a 3-pointer to put the Warriors ahead 19-16.

After a layup by T.J. Keith for Ironton cut the deficit to 19-18, Warren went on a 12-2 run and the lead was 32-20 with 1:56 left in the half.

Green’s jumper in the middle of the lane ended the run and a steal and layup by Marc Carter closed the gap to 35-24 at the half.

The Warriors took advantage of Ironton’s foul concerns and used a 10-4 run to take a 45-28 lead midway through the quarter.

A couple of layups by Miller got Ironton with 47-34 with 2:02 on the clock. But quickly as Miller heated up, he had to sit down and cool off when he called for his fourth foul with 58 seconds left in the quarter.

Eric Anderson then hit a 3-pointer just before the buzzer and Warren was up 54-38.

Trailing by as many as 19, Ironton’s Dustin Green drained back-to-back 3-pointers and Marc Carter hit a 3-pointer with just under a minute to play as Ironton closed to within 61-53.

Miller’s layup made it 66-57 and his 3-pointer just before the buzzer set the final score. Warren was 5 of 7 from the line over the final 1:02 of the game.

“The turnovers really hurt us. That’s what put us a hole. If there was one thing we could conrol, it was the turnovers. Once we got ourselves in a hole, we had to work so hard to overcome the lead,” LaFon said.

Marc Carter led Ironton (7-3, 3-2) with 19 points. Miller, despite limited playing time, had 15 points and Alstan Carter and Green added 12.

Anderson scored 17 points - 11 in the second half - to pace Warren (6-3, 3-2).
