SOUTH POINT — Just when Heath Bridges was about to go one way, the former South Point Pointers wide receiver ran a different route.

Bridges changed his career route Friday as he signed to play for Kentucky Christian University.

“I didn’t think I was going to college,” said Bridges. “At the last minute, coach (Dan McDavid) call them and they called us back.”

Kentucky Christian head coach Dane Damron liked what he saw of Bridges and teammate Jerrell Dean. The two signed letters-of-intent to play for the Knights.

“Jerrell and I push each other. We’re like brothers. It’s going to be exciting,” said Bridges.

Bridges likes Damron and the Knights wide-open offensive style.

“He’s a cool guy. It’ll be good to play for him, especially since he likes to pass,” said Bridges.

The 6-foot, 187-pound Bridges caught 22 passes for 310 yards and two touchdowns.

Originally, Bridges looked into playing at other schools such as Otterbein. He said he was glad he visited Kentucky Christian before making a decision.

“It’s pretty nice for a small school. I’m not worried about how big it is,” said Bridges.

Kentucky Christian will be playing its inaugural season this year with a six-game junior varsity schedule. Bridges likes the idea of helping to get the program started.

“We were the last people to play on the old field. We won’t get to play on the new field here, but it’s cool because we get to play on (KCU’s) new field.”

Heath is the son of Maria Brumfield of South Point.
