PEDRO — Everyone did their job.
With the entire offense doing what was needed, the Rock Hill Redmen cruised past the Wellston Golden Rockets 49-7 Friday in a non-league game.
The offense cranked out 514 total yards with 370 coming on the ground. Wes Pierson ran for 126 yards on just nine carries and scored three touchdowns.
Quarterback Drew Kuehne completed 10 of 12 passes for 144 yards including a 20-yard touchdown strike to his twin brother Seth Kuehne.
“We spread the ball around and executed our offense. The offensive line did a good job of run blocking and pass protecting,” said coach Todd Knipp.
“Our wide-outs did a good job of getting open, making catches and running with the ball after the catch.”
Centers Brandon Guy and Chris Lemasters, guards Herbie Butterbaugh and Josh Walker, tackles Chris Moore, Jordan Fuhr and Adam Fradd, and tight end Zach Zornes were integral figures opening holes for the backs and giving the quarterback time to throw.
The defense limited Wellston to 185 total yards.
“Once we got adjusted to what they were doing, we were fine,” said Knipp. “The defense stepped up and made plays when it had to.”
After a scoreless first quarter, Rock Hill exploded for 28 points in the second quarter.
“We did a good job of taking care of business early once we got past our mistakes,” said Knipp. “I think we had 150 yards in a 70-yard drive in the first quarter.”
Pierson bolted 65 yards for a 6-0 lead and then came back with a 17-yad scamper for a score. He added the conversion run to make it 14-0.
Shane Bostic plowed into the end zone on a 1-yard run as the lead grew to 21-0 and the Kuehnes hooked up for a score just before the half and it was 28-0.
Pierson had his second 17-yard touchdown run early in the third quarter and Andy Smith scored on a 3-yard plunge to open up a 42-0 lead.
Matt Lockard scored Wellston’s only touchdown on a 17-yard run in the third quarter. Lockard had 91 yards on 22 carries, but 66 yards came in the second half against the Rock Hill backups.
The Redmen capped the scoring on a 29-yard run by Mitchell Malone.
