STEWART — If Fairland coach Chad Belville went to Kings Island, he’d probably opt for a train ride instead of the rollercoaster.

Belville prefers a steady ride, one like the Dragons had Saturday as they beat the Federal Hocking Lancers 65-51.

“We had consistency. Our intensity was there for four quarters,” said Belville.

The Dragons also had something the entire game that the Lancers didn’t: Depth.

“They are one of the best shooting teams we’ll see all year. But they weren’t very deep and we are deep. Our depth was the difference again. We wore them down,” said Belville.

Michael Lamb led eight players in the scoring column with 26 points to go with five rebounds. Cole Hatfield had 15 points, six rebounds, and seven assists.

Federal Hocking took a 21-16 lead at the end of the first quarter., but Hatfield nailed two 3-pointers and scored 8 points in the second quarter as Fairland came back to take a 31-30 lead.

Hatfield scored 7 points and Lamb 6 in the third quarter. The defense held Federal Hocking to 6 points and the lead grew to 48-36.

Lamb scored 10 points in the fourth quarter including a pair of 3-pointers.

“(Lamb) just got on a roll in the second half and our kids kept feeding him,” said Belville. “We told the kids before the game we wanted to get the ball inside.”

Cory McCune had 16 points and Cory Vales 14 to lead the Lancers.

“Defense was a big key for us. Matt Bloomfield did a great job on (Kory) Williams and Cole held down (Grant) Smith,” said Belville.

“To go to their place and win is huge for us. Their coach said his kids had this game circled for a long time.”
