Chad Harvey believed in himself. Now his coaches do, too.

Harvey hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer to lift the St. Joseph Flyers past the Portsmouth Notre Dame Titans 54-52 Saturday.

“When (Harvey) let the shot go, (assistant coach) Jeremy (Williams) said, ‘It’s good.’ I wasn’t sure, but he was right. Chad drained it. It was a clutch shot,” said Flyers coach Kevin Sheridan.

Harvey finished with a career-high 30 points as the Flyers evened their record at 2-2.

Aaron Noel had 17 points and Taylor Fitch 10 for the Titans (0-4).

St. Joseph took a 6-0 lead to start the game but fell behind 13-11. The Titans extended the lead to 30-22 at the break.

“We came out of the gate well and being aggressive. But then all of the sudden we just stopped,” said Sheridan.

“Notre Dame played well. They out-hustled us and played hard. They probably deserved to win more than we did.”

Harvey scored 13 points in the third quarter and Pat Gagai hit a key 3-pointer as St. Joseph got within 41-39.

“Chad just started attacking more,” said Sheridan.

Joey Basedow hit two foul shots to put the Flyers up 51-48, but Alex Davis made a 3-pointer for the Titans to tie the game.

Alex Glockner hit a foul shot to put the Titans up 52-51 with six seconds left, but the Flyers rebounded the missed shot and Harvey raced down the floor and drained a 3-pointer at the buzzer to give the Flyers the win.
