HUNTINGTON, W.Va. — For two and a half quarters, the St. Joseph Flyers were putting together a strong road game.
That’s when trouble hit.
Leading scorer Chad Harvey went to the bench with foul trouble and the Flyers managed just two points the rest of the quarter. The result was a 68-56 loss to the Huntington St. Joseph Fighting Irish Friday.
“We just fell apart,” said Flyers coach Kevin Sheridan. “It wasn’t just that we weren’t scoring, but we weren’t playing defense.”
Harvey scored nine points in the first quarter to give the Flyers a 13-9 lead.
Harvey had nine more in the second quarter and the Flyers were up 28-26 at the break.
The Flyers opened the second half with a 4-0 run to lead by six.
But Harvey had to sit out with three fouls with more than five minutes left in the quarter and the Irish took advantage of Harvey’s absence to go on a 24-2 run that included four 3-point goals.
Khiry Sharp scored 12 of his 23 points in the quarter and Josh Chamber hit a pair of treys.
The Flyers cut the lead to 60-55 with more than two minutes to go. Harvey had another nine points with Caleb Blackburn and Payton Blair scoring five each.
But Lance West was 5-of-6 from the line to seal the Irish win.
“Another big thing was they controlled the boards. They limited us to one shot. We only had six offensive rebounds,” said Sheridan.
The Flyers were out-rebounded
28-22.
Basedow added 10 points and five rebounds for the Flyers (6-14).
West had 15 points and Chambers 13 for the Irish (8-10).
