When one team goes outside, the other team must focus inside.

Logan was living at the 3-point line Friday, connecting on 11-of-25 shots from beyond the arc.

But the Ironton Fighting Tigers used a strong rebounding effort and made 14 of their 22 field goals in the paint as they beat the Chieftains 71-67 in a battle for fifth place in the Southeastern Ohio Athletic League.

“They were shooting the ball from the perimeter and they shot it well at times, but we did a good job on the boards, especially on the offensive glass,” said Ironton coach Mark LaFon.

Pat Angle, who was averaging 13 points a game, exploded for 27 points including four 3-pointers. Mason Mason scored 15 and Zach Adams 10, but Lukas Wright was held in check with six points.

Wright, averaging 12 points a game, had 25 points in a 68-59 win over Ironton two weeks ago at Logan (13-7, 9-5).

“Logan has some big, strong kids inside and they have three or four good shooters. If you shut down one or two of them, the others will hurt you,” said LaFon. ‘They’re a solid team, so this is a good win.”

Ironton was led by Marc Carter with 22 points including 12-of-14 from the foul line. Ironton was 22-of-30 at the line, but 14-of-20 in the fourth quarter when Logan was forced to foul.

The Chieftains were 4-of-4 from 3-point range in the first quarter and led 13-6, but layups by Dustin Green and Jon Schweickart, a running jumper by Carter and a put-back by Green got Ironton with 15-14

A free throw by Zach Christensen and two by Lukas Morris gave Ironton a 17-15 lead.

Five straight points by Schweickart opened up a 26-20 lead before Logan tied the game on a put-back by Angle. But a triple by Carter and a layup by Morris gave Ironton a 31-28 halftime lead.

Carter hit another triple at the 1:27 mark of the third quarter as Ironton took its biggest lead at 47-37.

Chase Colliton hit a 3-pointer

moments later and Mays made another trey to start the fourth quarter as Logan got within 47-43.

A layup by Angle tied the game at 50-50 and the lead changed hands four time, the final with 2:14 left on two foul shots by Tim Kochendoerfer that gave Ironton the lead for good.

Ironton made 11-of-16 from the line over the final 1:30 to preserve the lead and improve its record to 10-9 overall and 8-6 in the league.

Schweickart finished with 17 points and Kochendoerfer 10.
