CHILLICOTHE — When things went bad for the Ironton Fighting Tigers, they really went bad.
Ironton trailed by just one run in the bottom of the sixth inning only to watch the Chillicothe Cavaliers score six times and beat the Fighting Tigers 9-4 Monday in a Southeastern Ohio Athletic League game.
“We went from having a chance to shooting ourselves in the foot,” said Ironton coach Tobey Schreck.
“We played pretty decent until the sixth. We made one mistake and then we just compounded it with more mistakes.”
Chillicothe scored three runs in the first inning and then Ironton got a run in the third.
Ethan Preston walked, Nick Lewis singled, and Jeremy Moore hit a fly ball to center field that was dropped.
The Fighting Tigers got within 3-2 in the fourth when Wes Runyon doubled and Ryan O’Leary reached on an error.
Chillicothe used an error, two walks, an infield hit, and two hit batsmen to score six times in the bottom of the sixth inning and it was 9-2.
“(Howie Lucas) pitched pretty well for four innings, but he just got worn out. Josh (Pancake) threw a good fifth and we made some nice plays behind him. Ethan Preston made one real nice play, but then the wheels fell off in the sixth,” said Schreck.
Ironton refused to quit and scored twice in the seventh.
Pancake singled, Preston walked and Lewis singled home a run. Moore grounded out to drive in the second run.
Ironton (1-2, 1-1) hosts Wheelersburg Wednesday.
