COAL GROVE — Strikeouts are nice, but the main thing that concerns South Point coach Steve Baise is just getting outs.

Hannah Huron and Sashe Burcham comebined for only five strikeouts, but the did not walk a batter and gave up five hits as the Lady Pointers beat the Coal Grove Lady Hornets 10-1 Wednesday in an Ohio Valley Conference game.

“They put the bat on the ball, but we didn’t walk anyone. All you can ask is to put the all in play and make the plays,” said Lady Pointers coach Steve Baise.

Emily Mannon, Tausha Collins, Ashley Kleinman, Ashley Smith,and Sashe Burcham spanked five straight doubles in the third inning as South Point broke a scoreless tie and took a 5-0 lead.

“All the doubles were line drives and they were all to the same place. We hit the ball hard,” said Baise.

The Lady Pointers (4-3, 3-1) had 13 hits with Kleinman going 3-4, Collins 3-5, Mannon 2-3 and Burcham 2-4.

PROCTORVILLE — Maybe how you start does mean more than how you finish.

The Rock Hill Redwomen finished strong, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the big start by Fairland as the Lady Dragons held on for a 9-6 Ohio Valley Conference win Wednesday.

Fairland raced to a 7-0 lead in the first inning and led 9-2 after six innings. Rock Hill rallied to score four times in the seventh inning, but the Lady Dragons held on for the win.

Fairland is now 3-3 overall and 3-2 in the OVC. Rock Hill falls to 6-7 and 2-2.

Mackenzie Rucker was 3-for-4 to lead Fairland’s nine-hit attack. Kathleen Blatt was 2-3.

Brooke Long was 2-4 and Jazel DeAutremont and Kim Moore 2-4 to pace the Redwomen.

Rock Hill is 6-7 and 2-2 in the OVC. Fairland is 3-3 and 3-2.

CHESAPEAKE — The River Valley Lady Raiders scored twice in the seventh inning to upset the Chesapeake Lady Panthers 4-2 Wednesday in an Ohio Valley Conference game.

The Lady Raiders broke the tie on doubles by Brittany Hardway and Stephanie Griffith. The second run scored on a dropped third strike.

Shelby Pike had two hits for Chesapeake (6-3, 3-1). Allison Chapman, Nikki Lindsey and Sarah Mayo each had one hit.

Terra Porter had three hits and Griffith two for River Valley (2-5, 2-3).

Wayne 6, Ironton 5

WAYNE, W.Va. — The Wayne Lady Pioneers used a four-run fourth inning to slip past the Ironton Lady Fighting Tigers 5-4 Wednesday.

Freshman Karlie Collins went the distance for Ironton and allowed only four hits. She struck out four and did not walk a batter. However, she hit four batters.

“Even though we suffered the loss tonight, I was pleasedwith freshman Karlie Collins’ effort on the mound,” said Ironton coach Missy Fields.

Ironton outhit Wayne 9-to-4. Emily Lilly went 2-3 while Brea Tackett and Mercedes Crockrel were 2-4 to lead Ironton.

Wayne got its four runs in the fourth inning on a hit batsman and three errors.

“I was also pleased that once Wayne had thier big inning, we stayed focused and made a comeback,” said Fields.

Ironton won a four-inning reserve game 9-4.
