Fall Quarter Community Education Classes are underway at Ohio University Southern.
Acoustic Guitar: For Beginners
This class is for anyone interested in playing acoustic guitar–from basic rhythm to soloing. Course topics include basic rhythm guitar (strumming chords with alternating bass lines), developing different picking techniques, using certain “hot licks” between chord changes, and building solos, transposing and arranging music for the guitar. Come share a few chords with us. Class is limited to 10 students. Instructor: Michael Garvin, seven sessions, Tuesdays, Sept. 16-Oct. 28, 5:30 – 7:30 pm, at OUS. Fee: $65
Aerobic Conditioning For Beginners
Looking for a low-impact, effective workout? Look no more! This class will help you burn calories and strengthen your cardiovascular system as well as add to your muscular endurance. Come join the fun and melt away those extra pounds and inches. A mat or towel is suggested. Instructor: Mike Pleasant, Tuesdays, Thursday and Saturdays, Sept. 16-Nov. 1, 5-6:30 p.m., 20 sessions, at OUS Campus and Community, 1508 S. Ninth St., Fee: $3/single session, $20/15 sessions, $25/20 sessions. This course may also be taken for one quarter hour of college credit, PED 120, Call # 71449.
Computer Keyboarding
Learn to type using home keys. This course will start you on the way to being able to type without looking at the keyboard. Emphasis placed on learning touch-typing and body position. (Class is limited to 10 students). Instructor: Tom Cantrell, Thursdays, Oct. 9 – Nov. 13, 6-7:30 p.m., six sessions, at OUS. Fee: $45.
Ballroom Dance (Introduction)
Do you have a cruise pending? How about a class reunion or wedding? Or do you just want to make a few new friends while getting some exercise? How about some new stimulation in your life? Grab a partner or come solo and let Gayle teach you a thing or two….step! Learn the basics of waltz, tango, swing, cha cha, foxtrot, and mambo/salsa.

Ballroom Dance (Advanced)
Want to go that next “step”? Need exercise to work off those extra calories? In our advanced ballroom dance class, you will enhance the steps and skills from the introduction class to take you to the next level. Look out–Dancing with the Stars! Introduction to Microsoft Powerpoint
You’ve been in meetings where you have seen presentations that were made using Microsoft Powerpoint. Now you can learn how to make your own professional presentations. This class will cover the basic aspects of the creation process-learn how to add text, graphics, backgrounds, transitions and many other features. Class is limited to 10 students. Instructor: Tom Cantrell, two sessions Thursdays, Sept. 25 – Oct. 2, 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. at OUS. Fee: $25.
Community Chorus
This performance-based course will give opportunity to those in the community who wish to develop their vocal skills while preparing for an end of the quarter concert to be given the first week of December. The course will combine vocal warm-ups, hands-on rhythmic exercises, and sight reading in order to develop vocal skills and acquire the best vocal results for our performance. Handbells, which date back to 17th Century England, will be added this quarter as an additional means of expressing ourselves through music. No prior music reading skills are necessary. Join us and add a little bit of music to your life. Our end of the quarter concert will be held in the Riffe Center Mains Rotunda on Dec. 1 at 7 p.m. Plan to invite your family for the Holiday concert.

Introduction to MicroSoft Word
Microsoft Word is a powerful word processing program. This class will introduce word processing and its terminology. We will learn about fonts, font size, justification, margins and line spacing. Skills from this class can be transferred to many other software packages such as MS Works and WordPerfect. Class is limited to 10 students. Instructor: Tom Cantrell, four sessions, Tuesdays, Sept. 23 – Oct. 14, 6-7:30 p.m. at OUS. Fee: $50
Scrapbooking for Beginners
Catch the craze and learn the fun art of scrapbooking! Just in time for the holidays! Customized scrapbooks make great gifts for holidays, weddings, baby showers, graduations, anniversaries, special keepsakes and more. In this course, not only will you learn the tools of the trade, but you will also learn about different techniques, layout and design, paper choices and accessories. Bring your favorite photos with you and let the instructor help you develop a theme page that will capture that special birth of a child or grandchild, special athletic event or special once-in-a-lifetime vacation. Supplies are included in course cost. Instructor: Nina Queen, four sessions, Sept. 23-Oct. 14, at OUS, 7-9 p.m. Fee: $65.
Stained Glass Art for Beginners
Stained glass is a pleasurable art and craft. It is a hobby for many-an art for the few. Stained glass is often used in the making of windows and lampshades, but it is also useful for boxes, clocks, cabinet doors, picture frames and other 3-dimensional projects. In this class, students will learn glass cutting techniques, tool usage, copper foil methods and soldering. One stained glass panel will be finished and framed. Blueprints will be provided the first day of class. Grinders, solder irons and chemicals will be available for use. Students will need to purchase supplies at Hobby Lobby in Ashland, KY. Re-registration is required for this class so that supplies and materials may be ordered. A frame is included in the cost of the class. Instructor: Christina Faulkner, six sessions, Sept. 23-Oct. 28, 6-9 p.m at OUS. Fee: $90.
