I don’t remember what happened yesterday?

The Ironton Fighting Tigers’ golf team enjoyed short memories Wednesday and it helped them easily beat the Portsmouth Clay Panthers in a dual golf match at Shawnee Golf Course.

Ironton won the Southeastern Ohio Athletic League championship on Tuesday and did not return until late in the evening.

But instead of a letdown, the Fighting Tigers posted a 155 team score to Clay’s 181 total.

Nathan Kerns took medalist honors with an even par 35, but he got plenty of help from his teammates who had their most balanced effort of the season.

Andy Holtzapfel, Josh Zornes, Josh Mullins and Johnathan Williams all put up a nine-hole total of 40 and Mason Weisgarber was just one shot back at 41.

A weary Fighting Tigers coach Jeff Kerns was impressed.

“I thought that was pretty good. I’m exhausted, so I know the kids are tired physically and emotionally. It would have been easy to let down and not play so well, but we had five scores at 40 and 41. That’s a good tune-up match,” said coach Kerns.

Ironton (59-12) will play in the Division II sectional tournament at 9 a.m. Tuesday back at Shawnee Golf Course.
