Jr. Hornets top SPMS in short order

COAL GROVE — Lightening shortened the game, but the Coal Grove Junior Hornets only needed a half to beat the South Point Junior Pointers 26-0 last Thursday in an Ohio Valley Conference Middle School game.
Brandon Hogsten scored on a 20-yard run following a blocked punt at the Pointers’ 20 for a 6-0 lead.
Tanner Dutey recovered a fumble at the SP 42 and Hogsten scored on the next play. Dutey threw to Bryan Steele for the conversion and a 14-0 lead.
In the second quarter, Steele recovered a fumble Kyle Estep scored on a 3-yard run two plays later to make it 20-0.
Alex Bare swarmed a third Pointer fumble at the South Point 40 and he then hit Steele with a 40-yard pass on the next play for a 26-0 halftime lead.
Lightening halted the game just three plays into the third quarter.
The Hornets had 193 yards rushing and 40 passing while limiting the Pointers to a mere 14 yards. Hogsten had 83 yards on just three carries and Estep 77 yards on five tries.
Brandn Newcomb had five tackles while Hogsten and Estep had four each to pace the defense.
Coal Grove (3-0) hosted River Valley Thursday. The Pointers (0-2) played Fairland.
