Knee surgery to end Valaika’s season

CINCINNATI (AP) — Reds utility infielder Chris Valaika will have season-ending surgery next week to repair a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee.

Valaika was hurt in the fifth inning Sunday at Colorado when his spikes caught in the dirt as he was swinging at a pitch. He singled on the play and stayed in the game through two outs in the bottom half before leaving. He expects to be ready for spring training.

Valaika hit .280 over 14 games in two stints with the Reds this season. He was not placed on the disabled list.

Also, shortstop Zack Cozart, already sidelined with Tommy John surgery on his left (non-throwing) elbow, is scheduled to have minor surgery to clean out his right ankle. Cozart is on the 60-day disabled list.

Ramirez arrested on abuse charge

WESTON, Fla. (AP) — Former World Series MVP Manny Ramirez was arrested Monday after a domestic dispute at his South Florida home and charged with battery, police said.

Ramirez, 39, and his wife were arguing in their bedroom when he slapped her face, causing her to hit her head on their bed’s headboard, according to a police report. She told the deputy she was afraid the situation would escalate and called police.

Ramirez denied hitting his wife, according to the report, telling a deputy she hit her head after he shrugged her. Ramirez’s wife had injuries consistent with her story, but did not want medical treatment.

Manning won’t practice until cleared

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Peyton Manning will not return to practice with the Colts until the doctors say he’s 100 percent.

Bill Polian, the team’s vice chairman, made the comments Monday night on his weekly radio show in Indianapolis.

Polian says Manning is doing “fine” and continues to recuperate from last Thursday’s most recent neck surgery. Manning has had three surgical procedures on his neck in the past 19 months and remains on the team’s active roster though he’s expected to miss at least two months and possibly the entire season.

Manning will be on the team’s active roster, Polian says, until the doctors say Manning cannot return this season.

Polian says he does expect Manning to return to the Colts at some point, though it may not be this year.

Browns extend DT Rubin’s contract

CLEVELAND (AP) — The Cleveland Browns have extended defensive tackle Ahtyba Rubin’s contract for three seasons, locking up another core player for the future.

Rubin’s 82 tackles led all NFL defensive linemen last season. He was in the final year of his contract, and his new deal is through the 2014 season. The 310-pounder never stops moving on the field and his work ethic and upside convinced the Browns to invest in him for three more seasons.

Financial terms were not immediately available.

The Browns remain in talks with running back Peyton Hillis on a new deal. Hillis, who rushed for nearly 1,200 yards last season, is making $555,000 this season.

Before extending Rubin, the Browns signed Pro Bowl tackle Joe Thomas to a seven-year, $84 million deal and extended tight end Evan Moore’s contract by two years. Moore caught a touchdown in Cleveland’s 27-17 loss Sunday to Cincinnati in the season opener.
