Special Olympics hosts basketball event
COAL GROVE — Participants from 12 school districts and local agencies took part this week in the Special Olympics basketball event, hosted by Dawson-Bryant High School.
The event kicked off on Wednesday, for teens and adults, then continued on Thursday, with children.
Patricia Moore, of Dawson-Bryant, said it was one of several Special Olympics events, hosted throughout the county in the school year.

Students from the high school worked as volunteers, keeping score, announcing games and serving lunch. Moore said the work is part of their community service projects for the year.
“And I have a phenomenal group of staff members here who help put this on,” she said.
This is the 51st year for the basketball event, Moore said.
“It’s so they can compete, as individuals and teams, with other athletes from around the county,” she said.
Earlier this year, a bowling event for Special Olympics took place at Spare Time in Ironton. Coming up is the track and field event, in the spring, which will take place on the field at Chesapeake High School.
