SOUTH POINT — The Village Council voted on Tuesday to pay their engineer to draft a plan to send to the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency regarding a contaminant filter for a new water well in South Point.
Mayor Jeff Gaskin said the council agreed to pay the engineer $75,000 for the task. The EPA has agreed to provide a contaminant filter for a new water well that was dug in the village last year.
That well was fully paid for by the agency, who mandated the village have it.
Gaskin said once the filter is procured, a process he estimated could take several months, the village will be able to bring the new well online, as well as another which has been shut down.
In other business, the council:
• Voted to adjust sewer rates and commercial water rates, an increase.
• Took part in a discussion about occupancy of the former South Point Elementary School property, located on Ninth Street, with no action taken.
Gaskin said billing for the village’s new water meters will begin in 60 days. Until then, he said customers will pay a base rate.
“After that it is a base rate, plus what you actually use,” he said.
